Genevieve Mathews
The very first Up a Little content visit. We visited the shared studio of besties Lilyan Stark and Genevieve Mathews. Two suns in human form, and we couldn’t have thought of a more fitting pair to begin this journey with.

“I like to think my work is a comforting presence. My painting is all about the body and our relationship to being in these physical beings… we’ve all got them - we’ve all got bodies with lumps and bumps and strange complex issues. I like to represent what it is to move and express through the body. Maybe that’s something that comforts somebody who views my work, to see an organic shape… maybe it’s different to their body, or maybe it’s similar, but it can have flaws and sort of strange angles and dramatic whatever that make it look more human.”
— Genevieve MathewsArtist Bio
Genevieve Mathews is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist based in Naarm, Melbourne. She melds themes of memory, dreams, rebirth and the politics of the nude body through a playful practice in charcoal, painting and sculpture. She works on canvas, mostly on a large scale, so as to engage her body in the art-making process. She believes that our bodies are homes in their own right, carrying within them our histories, emotions, and dreams. These themes come to life through dynamic paint and charcoal figures in states of ecstasy, despair, loneliness, isolation, intimacy and joy.
