Lilyan Stark’s practice draws from stills taken from a CRT television, including ABC’s Rage, music videos, films, and personal DVD collections, as well as found and bootlegged media. Her work reflects on nostalgia, obsolete physical media, and the changing ways images are consumed in an increasingly digital and instant culture. Her process translates moving images into paintings through a tactile, analogue sequence: capturing stills on an iPhone, printing them on an inkjet printer, and then reinterpreting them by hand on canvas. Through this approach, she explores themes of voyeurism, technological scepticism, parasocial relationships with media, and a broader reflection on contemporary digital life and AI.
