Artist Bio

Sophie Gemmill (b. 1996, Sunshine Coast, Queensland) is a Melbourne-based artist who received a BFA from RMIT (2025), undertook an exchange at the Universitat Politècnica de València in 2024, and was awarded The RMIT Ceramic Students Association Award (2025). Her practice sits between the ancient and the imagined, working primarily with terracotta to embrace its warmth, imperfections, and connection to earth, hands, and time, with organic forms that echo unearthed relics and draw on storytelling, folk art, and personal mythology.

Drawing from ancient pottery traditions and contemporary nostalgia, she reimagines the souvenir as an object that carries a story rather than function, exploring how memory, material, and place intersect to turn fleeting moments into enduring forms.
