Sophie McDarra
The door to Sophie McDarra’s home-studio opens directly onto the street, where passersby drift in as easily as the natural light.
On a sunlit March morning, we found her among canvases, stepping out briefly for coffee before returning to a day of shooting content filled with plenty of laughs and the occasional cheeky cigarette.

“I would describe my work as nostalgic and colourful. For me, my paintings are very nostalgic and they hold a lot of meaning to me. They’re little waypoints of my life; when I look at them, I’m reminded of the time or situation I was in when I painted them. I see my mum in the moon in my paintings. She used to sing a lullaby to me when I was little about the moon. I made one of these paintings when I was missing her, and it’s of me talking to the moon.
“Everything in my life is colourful… and I love it. I don’t feel like myself if my life is grey or black.”
