Tallulah Ainsworth

On a bustling autumn afternoon, co-founders Spencer Mu and Indi Williams paid a visit to Tallulah Ainsworth in her sun-drenched, high-rise Melbourne CBD studio.

“My work is an attempt to translate feelings within myself visually onto the canvas. The important thing for me is not to transcribe a meaning but a feeling. I want the viewer to understand the emotional intent behind my works.

I’m really interested in human relationships and how we communicate with one another, especially the disconnect between the internal and external self: how we believe ourselves to be, how we present ourselves to others, and how those presentations are then interpreted.

I’m interested in how to communicate a feeling or abstract idea…how does this emotion that I’m experiencing in my body go through my brain and then get implanted into the viewer’s brain through a picture that I can create?! I think that it’s not enough to be eloquent when ideas and feelings are so big.”

Artist Bio

Tallulah Ainsworth’s work is an exploration of relationships and human connection through magical realism. The absurdism and beauty of life is reflected in her evocative colour palettes and dreamlike scenes. The animal figures in her work show a rawer and more exposed emotional persona, and their relationships with the people show a dichotomy of the presented self and the internal self. The settings of her work are one of a lucid fantasy, liminal yet alive with vibrancy. The crux of her exploration is what does it mean to be human, emotionally? Ainsworth toes the line of animal, person, and dream in search of the answer
